What Courses are Required for Nursing in Australia?

There are Two Courses needed for Nursing in Australia.  It just depends on whether you would like to be a Registered Nurse or an Enrolled Nurse.

Courses for nursing – Registered nurse

In order to become a Registered Nurse in Australia you will need to complete the Bachelor of Nursing Degree.  This is available at most Australian Universities.

Courses for Nursing – Enrolled Nurse

To become an Enrolled Nurse in Australia you will need to complete a Diploma in Nursing or alternatively a Certificate IV in Nursing at TAFE or a recognised institution.

Online Courses for Nursing in Australia

There are many online courses for Nursing available in Australia.  This includes both the Bachelor of Nursing online degree and the Online Enrolled Nurse Course.

Nursing Courses for International Students in Australia

There are many institutions in Australia which offer Nursing Courses to International Students.  For example in Sydney, the University of Sydney’s Sydney Nursing School welcomes international students.  They offer Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies), Combined Nursing Degrees, Graduate Entry Maters, Bachelor of Nursing (Post Registration) and PostGraduate Course Work Programs.

Prerequisite Courses for Nursing In Australia

The admission requirements for Nursing in Australia has specifics as indicated below:

  • HSC or equivalent
  • A Senior First Aid Certificate from an accredited course
  • For International students an IELTS score of 6.5 or better
  • A criminal record clearance will need to be taken at the commencement of a nursing course
  • Students are required to adhere to the Health Departments vaccination guidelines in order to access clinical practice areas

High School Courses Needed for Nursing

Whilst not essential in all states and territories in Australia it is recommended that anyone intending to become a nurse in Australia include Biology and/or Chemistry in their HSC Units.
